The Miracle Life of Edgar Mint – Brady Udall
“If I could tell you only one thing about my life it would be this: when I was seven years old the mailman ran over my head.”
Brady Udall’s thoughtful and skillfully crafted first novel, The Miracle Life of Edgar Mint, opens abruptly and honestly. The book chronicles the ups and downs of the young Edgar Mint, an authentic and sympathetic underdog character who suffers great horrors and enjoys moments of true happiness. Edgar is a survivor, a champion over accident, impairment, bullying, menace, and oppression. He possesses an endearing goodness, a respect for the power of language, and an inspiring ability to overcome all obstacles in his path. The book is full of black humor, and a cast of characters both comic and tragic. If you want a novel that is immediately uplifting, this is not the book for you. There is definitely some darkness within the pages, but those pages are also infused with hope. It is an interesting and imaginative novel, and well worth a read.
