Talk to the Hand by Lynne Truss
Recommended by Ms. Lombardo
I first became a Truss groupie after reading her hilarious #1 New York Times Bestselling tirade against mangled grammar, Eats, Shoots & Leaves. In Talk to the Hand (subtitled “The Utter Bloody Rudeness of the World Today”) Truss provides further evidence of the decline of Western Civilization when she observes, “When did ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ become passe? When did society stop valuing basic courtesy and respect?” As someone who launches into an apoplectic fit when I wave someone on in my car and they fail to show due gratitude, or when I thank the cashier for taking my money but get silence in return, this book came as confirmation that I wasn’t alone in my impression that we, as a society, are taking a pass on some basic civilities. If you agree, or even if you don’t but appreciate witty and sardonic English humor, Talk to the Hand is a must read. Please. Thank you.
