The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
Perks is another cult classic similar to J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye. Set in Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania, “Charlie” is a freshmen outcast in high school. Charlie’s story is revealed in letter form to another student that he doesn’t know well, but thinks “is a good person”. We learn that Charlie’s only and best friend Michael committed suicide before the beginning of the book– leaving Charlie to face high school alone.
This is a great read for anyone who enjoyed The Catcher in the Rye– but a strong warning– This book was one of the top ten most frequently challenged books of 2009, for reasons including the book’s treatment of drugs, homosexuality, sex, and suicide.
