Chinese author Mo Yan wins Nobel Prize in Literature

Dashing the hopes of music lovers that this would be the year that Bob Dylan won the Nobel Prize, the announcement came down today that Chinese author Mo Yan was the winner of the coveted prize. This was the first Chinese author to win since Gao Xingjian won in 2000, but that award caused some controversy, as some maintained that Gao, a Chinese expatriate living in France, writing very critically of the Chinese government, could not properly be labelled a “Chinese author”.

Coming up soon: The announcement of the judges for the upcoming Man Booker Prize in fiction, and the release of the book list for the 2013 World Book Night. Stay tuned!
