Philip Roth, arguably the greatest living American novelist, has retired at the age of 78. Roth is the author of over 25 novels, and he has received nearly every significant literary prize worth winning. In 2006, the New York Times Book Review asked a wide selection of authors, critics and editors to select the greatest novel of the previous 25 years. The ensuing article listed the top 22 novels selected by this panel. Six of them were written by Roth.
