Because of the pressing demands of the Common Core Standards, the English Department has reëxamined the lists of books that we have been teaching at BHS over the past decade or more. We have found some areas where we would benefit by introducing new books to our core courses, and are excited to announce that the following titles will be introduced at BHS either this year or next:
Grade 9: Night by Elie Wiesel
Grade 10: The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, Life of Pi by Yann Martel (currently taught in the Contemporary Literature elective), The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka
Grade 11: The Crucible by Arthur Miller returns as a core text across all levels
Our discussion of the senior-year content is still unfinished, and we also plan on using these changes to encourage even more variety in what we teach down the line. You may see some of these texts appear in our classes this year, but just as likely, these might be texts that we fully launch next year. We are excited to bring new material into the four-year program of studies at BHS.
