You should all read The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky and strive to acquire one on April 30th! This is Burlington’s World Book Night and there will be 20 copies of Perks up for grabs. Trust me, you WANT this book. This is Holden Caulfield meets Augustus Waters from The Fault in Our Stars. Charley is a freshmen who feels lost, out of place, and like he has not quite found himself yet. Chbosky writes the entire novel in letters. Charley is writing to a friend that the reader does not know. Through his letters, Charley tells us about the drama of high school, his ups and downs, victories and failures. Charley is quiet and thoughtful and sometimes finds himself looking on from the outside. We have all had this “wallflower” type experience and can relate to how Charley feels as a shy freshmen. Once his new English teacher tells him to start “participating,” Charley realizes that there is a lot to experience. You will love his quiet, thoughtful, but incredibly honest insight into the world of high school and the challenges of life. He feels lost and like he can’t quite fit in like Holden Caulfield, but is also intelligent and sensitive like Augustus Waters. He worries about others and is careful with their feelings. Charley’s new friends share their love of music with him and we will share it with you if you are lucky enough to nab a copy on April 30th! The Devils’ Playlist has put together a “Perks Soundtrack” with many of the songs mentioned in the novel. You will love reading the book and listening to the bonus soundtrack of Charley’s experiences. Run, don’t walk to be one of the fortunate twenty to get The Perks of Being a Wallflower!
