This is an example word web for the word “blood” in Macbeth, using the app SimpleMinds+. Students used the word “blood” as their starting point, and found five quotations that included the word. They then identified the connotation of the word blood in the quotation, and linked that word to their quotation.
After students had completed their word webs, they shared with a partner to discuss the various connotations of the word blood in the play. I also showed a few students’ word webs on the projector to engender whole-class discussion.
Another possible starting point would be to have students generate a list of words and themes they associate with “blood” before searching for quotations.
