Practice: Phrases and Clauses

One more rule (not on the website):

  • An INDEPENDENT CLAUSE can be a sentence by itself (just like an INDEPENDENT PERSON can take care of herself).

  • A DEPENDENT CLAUSE cannot be a sentence by itself (just like a DEPENDENT PERSON cannot take care of herself).

REMEMBER:

  • A CLAUSE has a NOUN and a VERB.

  • A PHRASE is missing either a noun or a verb.

Label each group of words below as a phrase, independent clause, or dependent clause.

P = Phrase

IC = Independent Clause

DC = Dependent Clause

1. the ugly purple wallpaper

2. when it rains

3. the quiz was hard

4. under the table

5. after the sun goes down

6. the bird flies

7. when I heard the knock on the door

8. hid under the couch

9. the strong basketball player

10. in English class today
